Piece it all together and that's where making a Maple series comes in (dance..doesn't really have anything to do with animating...)

Yep. So I was pretty aware of Maple Guide's existence ever since I saw JrKiller's animations, but I didn't realize how many people, even very minor animators, used Maple Guide and became so good at animating compared to people who didn't. Even though I'm not planning on making a major pwnage series, I still want to learn how to animate more smoothly. I only use bannedstory and Sony Vegas to do my animations. Most tutorials I find use flash, which I don't have... So I'm hoping to learn more about animating WITHOUT flash. I know it won't give me the same result as the majority of animators on Maple Guide...

And this may seem like a stupid question, but I don't know how to make customs... Is it just a bunch of poses made on photoshop/paint/flash and then placed into frames? But if someone asks you to give them your sprite sheet if you have customs, how does that work out? What exactly is a customized sprite sheet? =(

Anyways, most customs are created by spriting.
You receive the templates from an animating forum's resources, and individually sprite your character onto them.
You can learn a little bit about spriting and making custom poses here. There is also a YouTube video by Shahaf321 which shows you how to make a simple crossed arms sprite.
